At the core of my professional skills is translation in creative fields, and particularly literary translation. Nevertheless, I am happy to work on various other kinds of texts, too; on my List of Publications, you can view, for example, some web content and academic articles that I have translated.
I accept translation commisions for English-to-Finnish and Finnish-to-English. Additionally, I read some French, Swedish and Italian, so it is acceptable for commission texts to include small amounts of these languages.
A translation is always a result of the work of the author and translator combined. So-called word-for-word translation serves neither the source text nor the translation reader. Out of respect to the source text, its author, and the readers of the translation, I approach translating holistically which means being precise, listening to client requests, and translating to suit the target language and intended context or use, among other things. Matters regarding the context, target language and culture, etc., are always determined in conversation with the client.

Literary translation
Literary translation is my creative passion; my dearest and most familiar type of translation. I am happy to work on literary translations for publishing houses and self-publishing writers alike. (Click on the description for more information.)
The framework of a translation, within which I recreate the atmosphere, style and linguistic expression of the text, is always determined by the genre, target audience and cultural or other unique features of the source text as well as the requirements of the commissioner. I always aim for a translation that is precisely made, true to the spirit of the source text and idiomatic to the target language.
Audiovisual translation and subtitling
I offer subtitling services in translation – that is, as audiovisual or AV translation – as well as for closed captions in either Finnish or English. (Click on the description for more information.)
My subtitling fees presumptively include the timing of the subtitles to match the video; a reduced fee may be offered if the client is able to provide a workable timings template. The client is expected to provide either the original script or a dialogue list to assist with the work. If the subtitling is to be done by ear only, this raises the fee. Additionally, the fee includes a short one- or two-sentence description of the video content for the client to use as a summary.
Unless the client states different needs, my translated subtitling follows the Finnish subtitling quality guidelines and my closed captions follow the Finnish closed captions quality guidelines (links in Finnish). Make sure to mention any requirements you may have in this regard.
I set my translation subtitling fees and terms according to what is negotiated in the Finnish audiovisual translators’ collective labour agreement; the updates of the April 2025 agreement are in reference to the previous agreement (links in Finnish).
Other types of AV translation except for subtitling are not offered at this time.
Document translation
Document translation is the most common form of translation, covering most types of non-fiction non-book texts. These may be websites, user manuals, advertisements, or leaflets, for example. (Click on the description for more information.)
Clear communication and end-use-focused translation are typically highighted in document translation. It is common to use an assistive translation memory programme to streamline the work, as these texts often include some repetition. If the client is able to provide a comprehensive existing translation memory, this may reduce the overall fee.
